These baby names rose in popularity after tragedy struck in 2020

What do you name a baby born in 2020, a year marked by global devastation unlike anything else we’ve collectively experienced? Well, you do not name her Karen, according to a new survey by BabyCenter of more than 520,000 parents, which saw a 13 percent decline in this name’s popularity. This much-maligned — and frequently memed — name has become associated with the sort of selfish entitlement blamed for the spread of the coronavirus. That’s why you see Reddit threads called “Karen wants a haircut,” according to The Atlantic

On the other hand, two names that have had meteoric rise this year commemorate the greatest tragedy our nation suffered before the pandemic hit U.S. soil — the helicopter crash that killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. BabyCenter reported a 175 percent increase in the name Kobe, and a 216 percent increase in the name Gianna. Some celebrities have chosen these names for their little ones, including Bryant’s former teammate, Pau Gasol, who, together with wife Cat, welcomed daughter Elisabet Gianna last month. “Elisabet Gianna Gasol, a very meaningful name for our super beautiful daughter!!” Gasol posted on Twitter to announce her arrival.

How politics has impacted 2020 baby names

The upcoming presidential election most certainly has had an impact on baby name popularity. The name Kamala is up 104 percent over 2019, presumably in honor of Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. On the other hand, the name Donald dropped by 163 ranks in the top 1,000 list, to spot 984. The name Melania, however, continues to remain significantly more popular than it was prior to 2017, when it spiked after the president’s inauguration, according to the Social Security Administration website. Joseph, a common Biblical name that’s been one of the most popular boy names for the past 20 years, had a slight dip compared to its 2019 ranking.

Politics and 2020 current events aside, the 10 boy and girl baby names for 2020 are unchanged from the 2019 list, according to BabyCenter. The names Sophia, Olivia, and Riley were at the top of the list for girls, while Liam, Noah, and Jackson were the top ranking boy names.

Hilary Duff Is Pregnant With Baby No. 3, Expecting 2nd Child With Matthew Koma

Baby on board! Hilary Duff is pregnant and expecting her second child with husband Matthew Koma.

Celeb Pregnancy Announcements of 2020

The Younger star, 33, shared a Boomerang via Instagram on Saturday, October 24, of Koma, 33, as he rubbed her baby bump while she smiled. “We are growing!!! Mostly me …” Duff captioned the post.

The couple — who tied the knot in December 2019 — are also the parents of 2-year-old daughter Banks. Duff also shares son Luca, 8, with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. The Lizzie McGuire alum told PureWow in January thatshe felt guilty about her second pregnancy.

Celebrities Announcing Pregnancies During the Coronavirus Pandemic: Pics

“The guilt that I felt for bringing her into the world was so big,” she said at the time. “It was just he and I for so long that he was like, ‘Why? Why, Mom? Why would you do this? I really just love the way it is.’ And it wasn’t bratty, it was just so sad. I was like, ‘How do I reverse this? It’s too late now.’”

She added, “It’s such big feelings. When you’re pregnant, everything just feels more magnified.”

Cutest Celebrity Baby Announcements

However after Duff and the songwriter welcomed Banks in October 2018, Luca fell in love with his little sister.

“It’s the best,” the “So Yesterday” singer said. “It’s a chemical reaction between siblings sometimes where he knows he has to protect her. … It’s really sweet the way he looks out for her. But also, sometimes I’m like, ‘Hey, I did OK with you. I promise I know what I’m doing.’”

Duff has received plenty of support from Koma, whom she praised as a “natural papa bear” in a touching Father’s Day tribute in June.

“You always put us first,” she wrote via Instagram. “You know exactly what to say. Affectionate beyond. Calm and strong. The kids don’t even know how lucky they are that it’s you…. but they will. It’s a gift I get to witness everyday. We love you more than words.”

Koma, for his part, revealed he’s “honored” to be Luca’s stepdad in a birthday tribute in March.

“Some of the perspective this kid brings into our world is actually mind blowing,” the DJ wrote at the time. “We have each other’s backs so hard and I’ve learned more from him than he’ll ever realize. Thank you Luca, for letting me walk you into school, for walking me down the aisle, reigniting the kid in me, singing my songs with me, looking out for my dairy allergy, teaching me every good iPad game, watching Frozen with your sister every morning, letting mom think you break things when I really do, and for just simply being you. We’ll always, always be the ‘sweet team.’ Can’t wait for you to read this in 15 years when you’re allowed to have an Instagram.”

Chelsea Clinton Opens Up About Spending Summer with Her Parents, Mom Guilt and Daughter's Idol

Mom guilt? Chelsea Clinton "definitely" has it.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the former first daughter opened up about her new children's book She Persisted in Sports and all things motherhood, saying she isn't sure it's even "possible to be a mom without mom guilt," especially during the current COVID-19 health crisis.

"[There are times when] I'm on my Zoom and [4-year-old son] Aidan's science class is crashing and then I'm off my Zoom rushing to fix the science class," says Chelsea, 40. "And then I can't stay with him to make sure he gets back on the science class. Then I'm running back into the next room to get back on my Zoom and then I feel like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm not doing either thing very well at the moment, but hopefully doing each as best as I can.' "

"There's so many moments like that," she continues, "every day for working parents, and so trying to just be honest about that — honest about the privilege for those of us who can work from home, honest about how much balance still has to happen, honest about how much will fall out of balance, at least some days … the dishes may not get done until right before dinner or maybe not even until after dinner for the whole day, and that's okay."

"Lots of guilt and navigation and just trying to do the best we can every day, and some days the best is going to be better than others," Chelsea notes.

Happy 40th Birthday, Chelsea Clinton! See How the Former First Daughter Has Grown Up Through the Years

Chelsea tells PEOPLE that she, her husband of 10 years Marc Mezvinsky and their three kids — Aidan plus his siblings Jasper, 15 months, and Charlotte, 6 — "spent all summer with [her] parents," Bill and Hillary Clinton.

"It was really wonderful for our kids to have that time with their grandparents — especially for Charlotte and Aidan to be with my parents in the season from late spring really through the whole summer, where they were able to plant a garden together and tend a garden together and pick and harvest the food together and eat the food together and play so many games," she says. "I was really grateful for that time."

Mezvinsky, Chelsea says, comes from a family of 11 children. And while it's a challenge to keep up with so many people, the couple really strives to "remain connected" with his siblings and their immediate families.

"Recently, some of our nieces and nephews and my kids have all been listening to the same audio books and talking about what they're hearing, what they imagine," she shares. "I'm super thankful [my kids have] had so much time over the last seven months with my parents [and] super aware of how much time we haven't had with other parts of our family. We've just tried to figure out ways to remain connected, especially for our kids with our cousins."

Chelsea tells PEOPLE that she thinks the message in her new book is equally crucial for girls and boys, saying, "I think it's really important that girls and boys alike grow up knowing and hopefully looking up to and being inspired by strong and persistent women."

"I wanted it to be about athletes and I did especially want it to be about Olympians because I love the Olympics and I watch as much of the Olympics and the Paralympics as possible and always have," she continues. "These stories just have inspired me throughout my life and still today, and so these also were the stories I wanted to share."

The book features a bevy of notable female athletes like Kristi Yamaguchi, Venus and Serena Williams, Mia Hamm and more — including one young Olympian that Charlotte has taken a major liking to.

"Charlotte is obsessed with Simone Biles and loves watching clips of her, thinks she can fly — which I agree, it isn't too far off — and just is full of such awe and wonder," Chelsea says. "She's like, 'Mom, Simone started gymnastics when she was 6.' And I say, 'I know.' And she's like, 'I could do that.' "

She adds, "And I say, 'Well, maybe, if you work really hard,' thinking, 'Of course you're probably not going to be the greatest gymnast of all time, but you know what? Maybe you are! Who knows? And you certainly won't be if you don't try and you don't persist.' "

She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changed the Game is available now on amazon.com.

Five Oat Beauty Product Launches

Whether oatmeal, oat milk or by itself, oat is emerging as a popular winter ingredient thanks to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sachajuan Fresh Lavender Body Wash and Body Lotion

Available at Net-a-porter. Prices range from $41 to $44.

Body care might not have always been Sacha Mitic’s wheelhouse, as the cofounder of Swedish hair-care brand Sachajuan, but that didn’t stop him from going all-in on the category. “We originally are a hair company, and we started these body washes because people told us they were using our shampoo all over their bodies,” he said. “It’s really important our products come from our experience and not a marketing perspective. Everything we do has a connection to the way we do our work, or customer feedback,” he said.

Most recently, the additions are its Fresh Lavender Body Wash and Body Lotion, which match its soothing scent with calming benefits. The hero ingredient, oat beta glucan, is from Mitic’s native Stockholm, and is derived from Swedish oats via a chemical-free, patented extracted process. “Usually, they can’t extract oat and put it into cosmetics, but a company in Sweden was able to deliver the molecule. It not only has great properties for the skin, but it also penetrates the skin. When you deal with things on your skin, you need vehicles that deliver them. It’s a very natural product, it takes away rashes, and it makes your skin very soft,” he said.

Wldkat Oat Milk + Saffron Glow Serum

Available at wldkat.com for $45.

When Wldkat founder Amy Zunzunegui launched her brand at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, her mission was simple: to put a loud, fun twist on functional, CBD-infused skin care. Her latest launch, Oat Milk + Saffron Glow Serum, she said, will probably be considered more serious skin care. “By nature of that, it will probably broaden our audience,” Zunzunegui said.

The serum features 1,000 mg. of broad-spectrum CBD, alongside oat and saffron and hyayluronic acid for moisturization. For Zunzunegui, the product’s ingredients speak for themselves. “There’s a lot of serums on the market, there’s a lot of glow products on the market. But for us, it felt really right for our customer to have a functional serum that works for all skin types,” she said.

The ingredient list exemplifies Zunzunegui’s old-meets-new approach to formulation. “We knew we wanted a serum, something hydrating with anti-inflammatory properties that was all about glow. Oat milk and oats are known for their calming properties. Saffron is starting to be discussed in skin care, and the serum’s loaded with CBD, which has high functional levels,” she said.

Lumene Arctic Hydra Care Moisture & Relief Rich Eye Cream

Available at skinstore.com for $26.99.

Seasonal weather changes are top-of-mind at Lumene, the wildcrafted skin-care brand based in Finland. So, when formulating a skin-barrier-protecting product for the delicate eye area, the brand turned to the Nordic landscape for inspiration. Alongside pH-balanced arctic spring water, upcycled oat oil adds a boost of thermal protection. “Oat oil has omega fatty acids and vitamin E, and is an excellent ingredient to strengthen the skin barrier function. Through that, it reduces transdermal water loss. It’s also a rich oil, it’s very nurturing for dry skin,” said Tiina Isohanni, vice president of research and development and sustainability at Lumene.

The product is especially geared toward dryness, tightness and irritation in the eye area, a greater consumer concern as temperatures drop. “We are also using nordic bilberry seed and canola for antioxidants,” Isohanni said, noting that the formulas are vegan and cruelty-free. “It’s really important that we use ingredients from Nordic nature.”

Eight Saints Hometown Honey Bar Soap

Eight Saints Hometown Honey Bar Soap Photo courtesy of Eight Saints

Available at eightsaintsskincare.com for $14.

Eight Saints gained its name from the eight hero ingredients in all of its skin-care formulations. As the brand expands into body care, the list of hero ingredients is expanding. The debut launch is a collection of three bar soaps with shea butter, goat milk, kaolin clay and coconut oil. The Hometown Honey bar includes oatmeal for its exfoliating properties. “Oatmeal is a really great mechanical exfoliant, whereas goat milk is going to exfoliate with lactic acid,” said Jessica Maxcy, brand manager. “The oatmeal is just an amazing natural exfoliant, and Hometown Honey is really good for acne-prone skin, eczema and psoriasis.”

For Maxcy, the ingredient’s draw also comes from its ability to draw oil out of the skin. The bars are super-sized, thanks to a custom soap cutter, she added. “We have ingredients we really believe in. We just thought they were lacking in the body department,” she said. “There’s a lot of mass-market body stuff, but as far as naturals with great quality ingredients, I don’t feel like it’s a big category out there.”

Jimmy Kimmel Shares New Footage of Son Billy's Health Battle to Urge Fans to 'Vote with Your Heart'

Jimmy Kimmel is sharing never-before-seen glimpses at his youngest child's health battle in order to encourage fans to "vote with your heart."

On Thursday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the late-night host, 52, introduced a video segment that tracked the hospital visits and surgeries he and wife Molly McNearney attended for their then-newborn son, William “Billy” John, who is now 3.

Kimmel and McNearney — who also share daughter Jane, 6 — overcame a hard first year with their baby son, as he had to undergo three heart surgeries (one when he was just 3 days old) after he was born with the congenital heart condition, tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia.

In sharing the emotional, personal new photos and videos of Billy (compiled by McNearney), Kimmel aimed to put health care at the forefront of voters' minds heading into the Nov. 3 election.

"I want to bring us back to focus on something we can't afford to forget, and that is health care," he said. "The vast majority of this country believes that health insurance should cover Americans with preexisting conditions."

Tom Holland Surprises Jimmy Kimmel's Spider-Man Superfan Son for His 3rd Birthday

Through the video, McNearney presents photos and clips of Billy just after birth, his stint in the NICU, and at his many hospital visits. The video points out Billy's three heart surgeries and says he has had over 60 doctor appointments in his three years of life.

While addressing President Donald Trump's attacks on the Affordable Care Act and the potential ramifications for families with a loved one who has preexisting conditions, McNearney writes: "Mom's don't forget. Please vote."

At the end of the video, the family showcases their happy son today, as he smiles, jumps and plays with his big sister.

"We are raising him to fight for less fortunate kids," writes McNearney. "Americans take care of one another. Vote with your heart."

Jimmy Kimmel's Daughter Jane Gives Him a Colorful Makeover for At-Home Show

Kimmel — who also has two older children, Kevin and Katie, from a previous relationship — first opened up about his son’s situation in May 2017, with a tearful monologue on his show. And in April 2018, Kimmel shared details with Oprah Winfrey about the feelings of detachment he and his wife felt, out of fear.

“There were secrets we kept from each other that we revealed only after the second surgery. The biggest one was that, I think subconsciously, we didn’t want to get too close to the baby because we didn’t know what was going to happen,” Kimmel said in an interview for O, The Oprah Magazine's April 2018 issue.

Bridesmaid Pumps During Wedding Photo Shoot: 'All for Normalizing Breastfeeding'

A Florida bride's wedding photo has gone viral because it features one of her bridesmaids pumping her breastmilk.

The photo, which was taken in October of last year but just went viral this month, featured bride Rachael Downs and her five bridesmaids holding their bouquets — while matron of honor Allison Helper holds her breast pump machine instead.

Photographer Amber Fletcher explained to Parents magazine that the photo was meant to be a silly recreation of the poster for the 2011 movie Bridesmaids.

"What happened moments coming up on the photo was that I finished the groomsmen a little early and Allison was still pumping," Fletcher said.

"I always do a photo like the Bridesmaids movie cover, so this seemed like the perfect time to utilize not only that photo in a humorous way, but to show the realness of the specific day," she continued.

"In turn, it brought light to what a day looks like for a bridesmaid who is currently breastfeeding/pumping," Fletcher added. "Rachael (the bride) and Allison (the one pumping) were down with it as it’s what the day truly looked like in a way and they are all for normalizing breastfeeding and pumping."

Downs told Today that she could empathize with her friend's need to pump and had no problem including it in her wedding photos.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

"I nursed my daughter for 18 months. I know what it’s like," she said. "I actually pumped at Allison’s wedding. We just didn’t get any photos!"

"The groomsmen finished their pictures early so I went to get Allison and she was like, 'I just need to finish pumping,' " the bride explained, adding that the bridal party "never thought it would blow up the way it did."

"But I’m glad it did," Downs added.

Fletcher added to Parents that it's been "amazing" to read the comments of so many women who relate to the photo.

The photo has certainly garnered plenty of attention online, with many expressing their appreciation for the group's embrace of pumping in public.

"This bride is absolutely fantastic. What a treasure of a friend!" one commenter wrote on Fletcher's Facebook post. "I see way too many stories in my breastfeeding groups about bridezillas throwing fits over the party leaving for any reason or 'inconveniencing' the wedding in any way."

"I love this. Support for the bride by being present and support for the bridesmaid by not making a fuss over her having to pump," another commenter added. "I wish I had friends like these. Women building women up and not being selfish. LOVE IT!"

The pregnant singer, 26, revealed to Kelly Clarkson on her eponymous talk show Tuesday that her baby on the way will be a son — though she initially thought she was expecting a girl.

"I did all those [old wives' tales] online — how fast is the heartbeat? Where do your hips go? — and I was wrong."

"I'm just over halfway and I don't know when to buy stuff!" said the "All About That Bass" hitmaker. "People want to buy me stuff, but I don't want to have two cribs .. what do I do?! Help me!"

Meghan Trainor Announces New Christmas Album: "It's About to Be A Very Trainor Christmas!"

Trainor and her actor husband, 28, announced they were expecting their first child together during an appearance on the Today show earlier this month.

"I'm very good as you can tell — it's all Christmas here," the mom-to-be teased, adding, "But there's other news that I'm dying to tell you and my heart's pounding out of my chest."

As Trainor said, "Hit it, Daryl," her husband proudly revealed, "We're pregnant!"

"We're so excited we couldn't sleep," said Trainor. "We've been waiting for so long. I was thinking about who do we tell first and I've told Hoda since I was 19, going to the Today show, 'I will have the most babies in the world.' "

She added, "Every time I see you, I'm like, 'It's going to happen' — and it finally happened!"

The pop star and Spy Kids actor married in an intimate backyard wedding in December 2018. The pair began dating two years earlier, when they were set up by mutual friend Chloë Grace Moretz. And they knew they were in it for the long haul from the start.

"I definitely was positive month one when he was on tour with me, and we were like basically living together on the road," Trainor told PEOPLE in 2018.

At the time, Sabara added, "It's super cheesy, but when you know, you know. As soon as she walked in the room and I saw her, I just knew: This is the one."

Amy Duggar King Claps Back After Fan Tells Her to Have More Children: 'I'm Flabbergasted'

Amy (Duggar) King is firing back after receiving an unwanted message from a social media user who told the mother of one to “pick up the pace” when it came to having more children.

Amy, whose son Daxton Ryan celebrated his first birthday last week, shared on Sunday that although she “tried so hard” not to publicly respond to the DM, she felt compelled to “speak my mind.”

“I think what really got to me was the fact that this total stranger apparently knows my body so well!?” wrote Amy, who is the daughter of Jim Bob Duggar's older sister Deanna. “I'm flabbergasted that someone would have the audacity to type these words to anyone!! I mean. Who in their right mind says ‘I think your body is ready to pop out more kids’ to a total stranger?!”

In the message, which Amy shared a screenshot of on Instagram, the stranger wrote, “Aren’t you a little behind some other famous people who are having 4 babies by the time they are 20."

“I think your body is fine to have more,” they continued. “You have a fun life but don’t be selfish with your life. Pick up the pace you should have been pregnant again like yesterday.”

View this post on Instagram

Whew! Ok..I'm just going to leave this here… I tried so hard not to post this . But . I literally had to speak my mind! ( when have I not?) This is a message I received yesterday. I think what really got to me was the fact that this total stranger apparently knows my body so well!?🥴 and literally tells me that my body is ok to produce more childen. Ready for my rant!? Of course you are!! ◇ First off I'm flabbergasted that someone would have the audacity to type these words to anyone!! I mean. Who in their right mind says " I think your body is ready to pop out more kids" to a total stranger?!🙄 This is for all the "Karen's out there." ◇My body has been through alot and it gave me the sweetest boy ever. Yes of course it was worth it. But I still need to heal. C- sections are no joke and vertigo is/ was very hard on me. I still get dizzy sometimes but I'm getting stronger everyday. ◇ Also. I AM TIRED. Anyone else!? This pandemic has been so rough on so many people and my business has taken a hit just like so many others. I need to be on my A game. I need to give it my all . I need to stay creative and focus on 3130. Children are such a blessing, but I can't imagine being pregnant again right now. I'd be unmotivated, emotional, stressed out and not in a good head space and that's ok to admit. ◇ I'm a very hands on mom, and I also want to give my son my full attention. This toddler stage is so amazing and I don't want to miss a thing!◇ A women's body is not a factory!! Yes our bodies can do miraculous things! But I hate that phrase" pop out" umm. No. It's WORK. And our bodies go through alot! ◇ I am an only child, and I think I grew up just fine. So cheers to the mama's who decide to have one child! Honestly we are teetering on that idea. ◇ Some women are designed not to have large families. I am one of them. Too much noise, chaos , it's just not for me. But kudos to those mama's who do! God gave you super human strength ◇ Deep down even though in a way it terrifies me I'd love to foster or adopt. ◇ It's exhausting always being compared to other people. I'm in my thirties now, away from that show and I'm so over it. It just has to stop.

“I am an only child, and I think I grew up just fine. So cheers to the mama's who decide to have one child!” she wrote, before going on to share that “even though in a way it terrifies me,” she and husband Dillon King haven’t ruled out fostering or adopting another child.

Sharing one final sentiment, Amy expressed that she’s “over” being compared to others. “It's exhausting always being compared to other people. I'm in my thirties now, away from that show and I'm so over it,” she wrote. “It just has to stop.”

“My heart skips a beat every time he wraps his hand around my finger, his beautiful red hair!! We tell everyone it's Heaven sent! I also can't get enough cuddles!” she continued. “And now to see his tiny feet walk toward me. Completely melts me!!.. my heart is yours sweet baby boy!!
